Yu Darvish gets $90 million from Padres to stay through ’28

SAN DIEGO, CA — On Thursday, Yu Darvish agreed to terms with the San Diego Padres on a new deal that would keep the 36-year-old pitcher with the team until the 2028 season. The right-hander, who boasts a bewildering mix of pitches, will be paid $108 million over six years, including the $18 million he was originally due in 2023 before becoming a free agency. He's under contract with San Diego until the age of 42. On Friday, the Padres planned a press conference with Darvish and general manager A.J. Preller.Darvish pitched the Padres to the NLCS last season, which was one of his greatest in his 11-year major league career. He concluded the season with a 16-8 record, a 3.10 ERA, and 197 strikeouts. He went 2-1 in the playoffs. The Cubs traded Darvish to the Padres in 2020. The Padres' newest free-agent acquisition. Darvish leads a rotation that features Joe Musgrove, a local kid who inked a $100 million, five-year contract in July. They signed shortstop Xander Bogaerts to an 11-year, $280 million contract in December, despite the fact that Fernando Tatis Jr. will be eligible to return from an 80-game ban after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance on April 20. Tatis will be moved to the outfield, most likely to right field. The Padres, who are still looking for their first World Series title, might spend even more money in the future. Manny Machado, the Padres' All-Star third baseman, has the option to opt out of his $300 million, 10-year contract after the 2023 season, and the Padres would want to see him conclude his career in San Diego. Last year, Machado finished second in the voting for NL MVP.
