Wong’s two homers lifts Red Sox to 7-6 win over Blue Jays

- BOSTON Tuesday night, Connor Wong blasted two home runs for the Boston Red Sox, including a game-tying solo drive in the eighth that gave them a 7-6 victory against the Toronto Blue Jays.

For Boston, Masataka Yoshida and Christian Arroyo also hit home runs, and the team's 14 hits, including four by Wong, equaled a season high. The Boston catcher started the eighth inning by hitting a 2-1 fastball from Erik Swanson into the seats of the Green Monster for his second home run of the evening and third in three days. He needed a triple to complete the cycle.

It was fantastic. Naturally, it's something you strive for, and success is fantastic," Wong said following his first game with multiple home runs and tying a personal high with four hits.

Wong also had a double in the second that bounced just past the yellow line at the top of Fenway Park's famous left-field wall. Prior to hitting a long home run Sunday in a victory against Cleveland, Wong had only ever homered once in his career.

The Blue Jays scored six runs in the fifth inning to put the Red Sox behind 6-3. The Red Sox fought back and won four straight games for the first time this season. George Springer grounded into a double play to record the last two outs. For the first time since defeating the Yankees last July 17 to go to 48-45, Boston (17-14) is three games above.

Richard Bleier, a reliever, earned the victory (1-0), while Josh Winckowski recorded his first-ever save. Swanson (1-1) suffered the defeat.

We only had one shot with him because the game clearly required it, but Cora admitted that she had really wanted to avoid him.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. concluded the game with two hits and two RBIs, and Daulton Varsho blasted a three-run home run for the Blue Jays in the sixth. Toronto has dropped three in a row.

They have a strong hitting lineup. The most of the year, they have been doing it, according to John Schneider, manager of Toronto. "Tip your cap," the speaker said. "I suppose you kind of pay the price when you make errors.

With a solo home run to right-center in the fourth, Yoshida increased his hitting streak to 12 games, giving Boston a 3-0 lead.

Refsnyder and Yoshida's RBI singles in the fifth gave Boston two runs back, and Wong's solo home run in the sixth brought it back to even when a spectator was seen touching the ball after it had cleared the top of the wall.

With his first home run of the year, Arroyo gave the Red Sox a 1-0 advantage by launching a 1-1 changeup far over the Green Monster. Wong then hit a drive barely inside the foul line off the huge wall in left field.

Rob Refsnyder singled to start the third inning, and Alex Verdugo scored after hitting his second consecutive double. Kevin Kiermaier of the center field made a terrific play to throw Rob Refsnyder out at second.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Blue Jays: Springer was back in the lineup after getting scratched from the series opener Monday because of an illness. Springer was initially called for an error in the sixth after misplaying a Justin Turner‘s pop fly down the right field line that bounced out of play and was eventually ruled a ground-rule double.

Red Sox: LHP James Paxton (strained right hamstring) will make another rehab start with Triple-A Worcester on Friday, manager Alex Cora said. Cora said Paxton is close to a return, but feels he has a few more things to improve before making a return. … RHP Zack Kelly had surgery on Tuesday on his right elbow, the Red Sox said.
