Wild card Weekend It’s our world. Yes, you the Fans, The NFL is just living in it.

The last seven to ten days have been pretty crazy for a lot of people in the sports world. Last week started off with some pretty shocking changes in coaching circles, both at the collegiate and professional level. All the hoopla of retirement and firings and hirings was followed up by an NFL wild card weekend that could only be described as, well, absolutely wild!

After 17 years the head coach at The University of Alabama Nick Saban is retiring. I’m pretty sure that the entire Southeastern Conference and probably the rest of the colligiate football world is breathing a sigh of relief due to the fact that it was almost impossible to beat a team coached by this guy. Half a dozen or so national titles, a basket full of bowl victories and nearly 100 players drafted in the top three rounds of the NFL make for a very impressive resume. He’s earned a good rest. A new chapter for The Crimson Tide awaits as college football moves on from the Nick Saban era.

A new day has dawned in New England as well. After 23 years at the helm of The New England Patriots Bill Belichick will seek a new job in parts unknown. Frankly, I was a little tired of him although it’s obvious that he couldn’t win without Tom Brady. Was he ever a winner without TB? Will he become a winner without Tom Terrific somewhere else? Doubtful but we’ll have to wait and see. Safe travels coach!

Now onto NFL the playoffs which certainly lived up to a wild and crazy billing! Last week I predicted that there are going to be some unexpected teams at the end of all of this and for once I was right. The entire weekend was basically a weekend of upsets.

Saturday started off on a low note but ended up high as I watched my hometown Miami Dolphins get crushed by Kansas City 27-7, I wasn’t expecting a win here but there’s always a chance right? Having an injury report that was longer then the casualty list at the battle of Stalingrad didn’t help the Dolphins as Patrick Mahomes and The Chiefs cruised to another victory in front of a very frozen home crowd. Does Kansas City have what it takes to win a third straight Superbowl? I think not but I’m willing to wait and see. The evening event featuring The Browns and The Texans proved to be much more entertaining(and financially satisfying) as an underdog Houston team handled Cleveland easily winning 45-14. The game was never in doubt in this one as Houston seemed to score at will. If The Texans continue to play at a high level they could easily be there at the end and of course I have to collect on a friendly bet I have on that one!

Don’t look now but The Detroit Lions have won a playoff game! After a three decade drought the team from the motor city made up for it by squeezing by the LA Rams 24-23. This game was tight all the way to the last minute but a tough Detroit defense was able to stifle Matt Stafford and company at the end. The Lions are a tough, hard nose team. They’re also on a massive roll which is why I took them as one of my weekly picks, and won.

I’m not sure what to say about The Dallas Cowboys. Getting beaten by a young and inexperienced Green Bay team, at home in Dallas, in front of Jerry Jones feasting from a beautiful stainless steel buffet, in some ways satisfied the working class hero in me. I love seeing billionaire yacht owners get beat and a butt kicking care of The Packers 48-32 was so completely satisfying I celebrated a bit too much and woke up with a hangover. I’ve said before on this very forum that Dak Prescott has been overrated his entire career and this game proved my opinion. If I was the 49ers, I would be very concerned about Green Bay. A team with all the momentum is going to be tuff to beat. San Francisco will have their hands full.

I can’t decide if Josh Allen wants to play quarterback or running back. He does well at both! Seeing him run, not scamper mind you but run, 52 years for a touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers was a highlight of my weekend. The Bills have literally become my Superbowl favorite overnight. Forget Kansas City, it’s now The Bills or bust! Handing a loss to the Steelers 31-17 has proven to me that they once again belong in the conversation. Having home field advantage, finally, may allow The Bills to purge the demons from their history. I still remember the four straight Superbowls that they lost(sorry to mention it Buffalo).

In the end it was a completely satisfying weekend for me. I went 2 for 2 on my official picks so I managed to recoup some of the pride I’d lost the last few games of the regular season. Although the Dolphins season is over I’m optimistic that they’ll do well next year. Frankly I thinks it’s a small miracle that Tua didn’t fall victim to another concussion. Hats off to whoever designed his new head gear! Another great weekend of football awaits us. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep making winning picks and searching for a cheap condo in Lake Tahoe!! Play On I Say!!!
