The Re Mix of These Classics I left my heart (and a Championship) in Las Vegas

The 2023-24 NFL season has come to a close. Another Super Bowl has come and gone and yes The Kansas City Chiefs are champions once again. For the third time in 5 years the boys from KC have hoisted the Lombardi Trophy. I’m happy that I picked them but at the same time a bit let down by the fact that San Francisco Wonder Boy Brock Purdy did not realize the dream for himself and his team. It was just not meant to be. He was characteristically well spoken in defeat, vowing to do better next year. Patrick Mahomes winning his third Superbowl MVP was also (somewhat) humble. It’s obvious that a dynasty is living in Kansas City and although I would not put him quite on the same level as Tom Brady comparing him to Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow is a joke. Those three can come see me when they’ve won three rings and three MVP’s. Until then, Pat Mahomes is The Man.

I’m sure everyone has replayed the game several times in their heads or on one form or another of entertainment and social media so I’m not going to lay out the specifics but essentially it started out as a boring, ho-hum game with an occasional flash of brilliance and fumbling by both teams. The first half seemed to be more focused on Taylor Seift and her friends then it was on the game. Kansas City was behind and The 49ers held a 10-3 lead at the half and the 49ers seemed in control. However, the third quarter is when everything changed and number 15 for the Chiefs started making number 15 plays. All the 49ers could do was sit back and watch the magic. The great San Francisco melt down had begun. If you put Patrick Mahomes on the spot you better be ready to pay the consequences. His passing as well as his running was masterful. The best part about it was for the second time in 5 years he had Joey Bosa in tears on the 49er bench. Someone pass that guy a box of tissues!

It can be hard to transition from one major sport to the next but being informed and engaging makes the job easier. Time to move on to NCAA  and NBA basketball with a little PGA Golf, NHL Hockey, Leo Messi and European Champions League Soccer mixed in to make it more seamless. Oh, and don’t forget the Kentucky Derby in a couple months! (Let’s hope Taylor Swift doesn’t plan to date a Jockey).

With just a few short weeks left until we all start filling out our NCAA basketball brackets the season is on fire with several dozen teams making a run in their respective conferences. The national media is turning up the volume on their favorites to make the tournament and attempting to guess who will get in the back door(commonly known as “bubble teams”). Several teams currently in the top 10 or 15 spots in the country seem to be a shoe in to make the bracket in a top spot. Upsets however continue to be the order of the day from week to week so nothings written in stone, yet. I would stay tuned for more on the NCAA tournament as we head towards the month of March. For about three weeks it will consume us!

As usual, most of the talk about the NBA centers around a few big market teams. Sometimes I think that the national sports media empire has forgotten about teams like Orlando, Oklahoma City and Seattle while placing teams like The Lakers, Celtics and Golden State Warriors on the nightly television pedestal. I’m a Miami Heat fan thru and thru and I get my dose of reality once or twice a week but it would be folly to ignore teams like The Los Angeles Clippers, NewYork Knicks and Atlanta Hawks. As we’ve seen in the past few years it can be anyone’s bid to win the Championship and injuries will make or break a season. No, I’m certainly not forgetting the Denver Nuggets either but everyone has heard about them enough I figure. At the end of it, it’s important to realize that it’s a long season and a lot could happen between now and The Finals. I’m taking a wait and see attitude.

In a couple of short weeks the 2024 Major League Baseball Season will begin. With all eyes squarely focused on football the past 5 months I think it’s important to remind everyone that “America’s Game” is about to begin and everyone and I mean everyone needs to watch out for The Los Angeles Dodgers who have bet the farm and a kingdom’s fortune on a line up that is downright scary. The addition this year of Shohie Ohtani to a roster that includes Mookie Betts, Clayton Kershaw, Freddie Freeman and Jayson Hayward should put the entire league on notice the The Dodgers are for real season and are looking to win it all at any price. Of course, with all the money spent will it be wasted when a small market team knocks them out of the playoffs? We’ll have to wait and see! Just ask last year’s New York Mets and New York Yankees how those big money rosters treated them!

For most of us the month of February can be a tough month to suffer thru. We’re all having a massive football hangover and it’s painful. For the last few months we’ve gorged ourselves at a pig skin buffet that gave us some of the greatest memories of the year. Sure, for some of us it didn’t turn out the way we wanted but it was exciting to all the same right? We need to refocus, reprioritize our lives and game watching schedules. My advise is to sit back, enjoy the winter and spring and pray for an early start to NFL preseason and and the 2024 College Football season because they’re sure to be a couple of great ones! Until then, Play On I Say!!
