Sometimes Life Imitates Football

If Forrest Gump was in charge of college football I think his commentary on the present state of affairs would be the same as his commmentary on life in general. It’s like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get. The problem with this philosophy is that it’s absolutely killing my success rate with my game picks. I never know if my pick is gonna be a delicious chocolate covered peanut butter bon bon or some tasteless roll of a confectionery unknown that I want to spit in the garbage. Go Figure!!

Everybody that’s seen the movie “Forrest Gump” knows that he played for Alabama, pretty special.  He played for Bear Bryant at Bama which is even more special. I didn’t watch college football in the 60’s or 70’s but I’m betting that Alabama was a pretty good team, certainly better then they are now considering they are sitting at number 14 in the College AP Poll, so far down the line that they need another Forrest Gump made for the movies miracle to make the playoffs. Bama could use Forrest right now. Stay tuned on this one.

Thankfully, not every team in America needs a miracle to save their season. Oregon, Georgia, Miami and Penn State seem to have their affairs well in hand. Texas, Ohio State and Tennessee might not need Devine intervention but they could certainly use some help to stay in the race for the playoffs. Remember that 12 teams get in this year so I’m expecting a real circus after Thanksgiving when the the final standings come out. Thankfully we’ll still have the conference championships to contend with so I’m looking  for a couple of late bloomers to sneak in. Stay tuned on this!!

Unlike most of the major sports media outlets I always try to give some love to the smaller schools, the near to unknowns that play just as hard as any team and to whom football is just as important. It’s true people, not everyone is chasing NIL money or The Heisman Trophy. Some kids just love the game.

For a week or so recently both Army and Navy found themselves undefeated and in the top 25. Although it didn’t last long it was pretty much an unprecedented event to have them both dreaming of a spot in the playoffs. I give them both credit (as well as The Air Force Academy) for holding their own against D1 schools whose players stand to make big money before and after graduation. The best part of the whole scenario is that the annual Army/Navy game this year will undoubtedly be a barn burner. (I wonder if the President will attend?) Look for a made for TV miracle if Army(presently undefeated) can pull an upset over Notre Dame on November 23rd!! That would certainly stir up the playoffs!!

In mentioning The Colorado Buffalos I would like to take the opportunity to apologize to absolutely nobody. I didn’t think they would win five games yet are now at 6-2 and ranked 24th by just the slimmest of margins(and I mean VERY slim). Having 6 wins of course makes them Bowl Eligible, whatever that means, and I can assure you that whatever the outcome of the rest of the season we are going to have to suffer through several weeks of The Dione Sanders show come bowl season. Hopefully the pain will pass quickly, like a root canal or the amputation of a limb without anesthesia, but rest assured it will be a must watch game whatever bowl it is. They always seem to draw a crowd and a packed stadium regardless of the game.

Lastly, a discussion on my game picks I know is always appreciated. I’m just a hair over 55 percent at this point in the season and was 2 for 3 last week. I’m trending upwards!! Like most people out there I’m consulting experts, designing algorithms, studying game tape and interviewing players and coaches.im literally cross crossing my neighborhood. I have’nt found the perfect solution yet regardless of how much I study. Picking winners isn’t easy as we all know but it’s the love of the game and the drama, the crazy crowds and the crazy story lines that keep me watching college ball week in and week out. With the rest of the world seemingly descending into chaos it’s a great distraction every weekend, or at least until get crazy around playoff time!! Look for my podcast this weekend with my latest picks and stay tuned next week as I start to discuss this years Heisman race! It will be an interesting one. Play On I Say!!
