Oilers Make Surprise Trade For...

EDMONTON -- The Edmonton Oilers know how to inject entertainment into a boring day. Just a couple days before the Oilers need to come to a decision about dual offer sheets, they make a separate trade. The Oilers have until Tuesday at 7:30 AM Mountain Time to make up their minds about Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. On this average Sunday afternoon they traded an Ottawa Senators fifth round pick in 2025 for Vancouver Canucks forward Vasily Podkolzin. Podkolzin is a project and needed a change of scenery. In 19 regular season games he only collected two points while averaging 10:49 of ice time. His ice time further diminished in the playoffs, where he only skated 8:32 on average over two games. Podkolzin spent some time in the AHL this past season. In 44 games he collected 28 points. This was a step down from the 18 points he produced in 28 games the year previous. The 23-year-old Russian forward was drafted 10th overall in the 2019 draft, two selections after Broberg. This is a curious trade to make so close to the deadline for the offer sheet decision. Could this be Holloway's replacement? Or simply a deal to shore up the depth of the forward ranks and create further competition? Hockey fans may find the answer to this sooner rather than later.
