Locks, One Thing, There Is No Locks

It’s been an interesting week of college football to say the least but then again when is it not?  If you’re a fan of The University of Florida or Florida State your gridiron life is in the toilet right now. It’s over for you. If you’re a member of the crowd that cheers for Georgia, LSU or Michigan you’re beginning to see cracks in the armor and might be a bit worried. Fans of Tennessee, Texas, Miami(Fla) and Mississippi can go ahead and unpeel themselves from the ceiling because it’s time to start making plans for the future. Week 3 in college football has shown us all that it’s time to fish or cut bait as they say in The South and some schools are responding with relish.

My picks did not go well this past week. I was zero for two however mildly redeemed by the fact that my transfer portal babies had great success. Riley Leonard and Dillion Gabriel both had stand out games at Notre Dame and Oregon respectively. Mississippi, the number one transfer portal recipient school in the country, destroyed Wake Forrest 40-6. Maybe there’s something to the transfer portal after all, maybe not. It’s only week three.

It’s hard to watch players get hurt. No one wants it especially with what we’ve seen in the NFL in the last weeks. When Quin Ewwers went down with a pecktoral strain early in the game on Saturday we may have all witnessed the beginning of a college football story that will last for many years, maybe into the NFL. Arch manning coming in and accounting for a whole bucket of touchdowns (including running for one) definitely looks like he’s ready. Texas is stacked right now and have taken over the top spot on the AP Poll. Look out Georgia, Texas is coming for you!

It’s hard for me to understand why people are panicking after just a couple of weeks into the season. It’s also hard for me to comprehend that people are already picking the Heisman Trophy winner. Personally I have about four or five possiblities for each catagory at this point. I like Texas, Georgia, Southern Cal and Oregon in the playoffs (remembering of course that there will be 12 teams to start with) and I’m leaning towards the two Texas QB’s to make a run for The Heisman. It’s hard to ignore both Ewers and Manning. I don’t think any of the Colorado players are gonna be in the top five. At this point I’m just struggling to remember their names.

It’s sad to think that once powerful teams like Florida State and The University of Florida are already seeking new leadership. It can’t be easy being head coach at either of these schools have both of them have fan based that demand instant success. I’ve never been a big fan of buy outs but both of these schools need new leadership at the helm. May the pain pass quickly. As a resident of Florida I can tell you that the college football fans there are brutal. It’s either win or go home and you can get run out of Gainesville or Tallahassee over one or two games.

There’s always a couple of sleeper teams and this year is no different. Not a lot of people are paying attention to Ol’ Miss who have been absolutely destroying the competition. Additionally, Nebraska has a stand out Mahomes-like freshman quarterback that could propel them deep into the post season. As I’ve mentioned before, with 12 teams entering the fray it could be anyone’s game this year. Oh, and don’t forget about Alabama who as usual look amazing even without head coach Nick Saban.

Of course, all of this conjecture makes picking winners difficult. They’re no pattern yet of strong teams covering the spread or even winning outright for that matter. Powerhouse teams giving up 14 or more points are barely winning by a field goal. Maybe the SEC is not as strong as everyone (including me) thinks! I think at this point you would be safe to go with the obvious but Team Obvious has yet to show itself in my book. For now I’ll play it safe and pick the strong match ups and walk away with less but at least walk away with something!! Pay on I say!!!
