Ilya Samsonov, the starting goalkeeper for the Toronto Maple Leafs, abandoned Game 3 of their second-round playoff series against the Florida Panthers after slamming into Luke Schenn.
At the beginning of the third quarter, he was declared officially out of the contest.
After making every effort to thwart a scoring opportunity in front of the Toronto net, Schenn bowled into Samsonov. Early in the second period, the Maple Leafs goalie looked to grip his shoulder and laid down on the ice for a while before being helped out of the game by trainers. Before departing the game, Samsonov turned away all eight attempts on goal. For the Maple Leafs in the postseason, the 26-year-old has started each of the nine games.
Here’s how the collision happened:
Less than one minute into the second frame, Joseph Woll took Samsonov's spot. Woll had a shaky start, as he allowed Panthers winger Anthony Duclair to score the game-tying goal on the second shot he faced before appearing to settle down. On the tenth shot Woll faced, Carter Verhaeghe buried his fourth of the playoffs to tie the game once more after Erik Gustafsson had restored Toronto's advantage.
Woll, who spent the most of the season as a strong force for the AHL's Toronto Marlies, appeared in seven games with the Maple Leafs this season, finishing 6-1-0 with a.924 save percentage.
According to Sports Illustrated's David Alter, immediately after Samsonov departed the game, Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas spoke with goalkeeper Matt Murray before Murray changed into a suit to support Woll for the remainder of the game. Murray started the season as Toronto's starter goalie, but as he fought through many ailments, Samsonov and Woll overtook him on the depth chart.
