Kev’s Weekly Sports Re-Cap When Your Season Is Over Early Don’t Take It So Hard

Every year it seems that certain teams in certain leagues are expected, even strongly predicted, to win it all. It never fails. As soon as one championship is over and done with the next year’s winner is chosen and the odds makers begin to spin their numbers. In the past the buzz was Will the Kansas City Chiefs repeat? Can The Denver Nuggets win it all again? Will Las Vegas hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup two years in a row? Expectations can run high. The hopes and dreams of millions of fans can hang in the balance. Eventually, somewhere along the long line of playoff games and qualifying rounds, reality sets in. Teams that were picked to win it all, the so-called odds-on favorite, that sure shoe-in, find themselves booking flights to Europe and Mexico as their vacation started earlier than anticipated. Nothing seems to cure the wounded pride of a million-dollar athlete quicker than a few weeks on a sunny, tropical beach with a resident super model. That’s right folks, reality can be a bummer.

I don’t think that there is any team in America who have been slapped in the face with a dose of reality more than The Boston Bruins. I’ll admit I don’t watch a lot of hockey. I follow a few teams that seem to be in the playoff’s year in and year out but basically, I don’t pay the sport as much attention as I do football, that is until the conference finals come around and then things can get interesting. Shockingly, The Bruins were once again sent packing (for the second year in a row) by The Florida Panthers. Mind you, The Bruins, for two years now, have been heralded as one of the greatest teams to hit the ice yet seem to be destined to be ruled by a team from South Florida. Hopefully those plane tickets will be cheap. Have a nice trip guys!

Speaking of repeats, just about every sports fan in America, Europe and Asia believed that the Denver Nuggets could repeat as NBA champions. I’ll admit I was one of those that believed. With basically the same team as last year they had momentum all season and stayed healthy. Everything seemed to go Denver’s way until of course they were introduced to Anthony Edwards and The Minnasota Timberwolves who decided that The Nuggets needed to keep the Bruins company on some tropical beach. Exit team number 2 and the hopes and dreams of a few million more (myself included) went with them.

Boston seems to have been cursed by the sports Gods lately until this year when the Boston Celtics have made quick work of the Knicks and now (maybe) The Cleveland Cavaliers. A feisty unheralded team from Ohio is making it difficult for Jason Tatum and Boston’s 100-million-dollar roster and to be frank if The Celtics don’t win the title this year, I think Bean Town fans will be drowning themselves in Cape Cod Bay. Because that only leaves the Red Sox and fans let’s face it, the Red Sox are not exactly leading their division in the Major Leagues.  I think all we can do at this point is offer up our thoughts and prayers for Boston fans. May the pain pass quickly if the Celtics tube, again.

A year ago, everyone said the Dallas Mavericks were making a big mistake by acquiring Kyrie Irving in free agency. Teaming him up with Luca (My Most Valued Friend) Doncic seemed to be a mistake of epic proportions. Two huge ego super stars didn’t seem to be working out the way everyone expected. The whole idea seemed to be an experiment in futility. Well, a lot can happen in a year and whatever the Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and head coach Jason Kidd have thrown into their steaming witches brew has transformed this team, literally. Luca and Kyrie are now playing so well you’d think that the spirit of LeBrone and Dwayne Wade had been resurrected from the ashes. The Minnesota Timberwolves are now looking like some dog pound rescue puppies and are down big time in a series that was supposed to easily go seven games. No NBA team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit and hopefully everyone from the Rio Grande to the headwaters of The Mississippi River are reminding Anthony Edwards. If you’re gonna talk the talk you need to walk the walk and right now Ant Man is stumbling and bumbling straight to that tropical beach resort he will go, again no sympathy from me as he will most certainly have a cute girlfriend to keep him company!!! As well as other company from the Bruins, Nuggets, Lakers, Golden State and others.

With the future NBA finals seemingly destined for Dallas and Boston I think it’s safe to say that it should be a great competition. Basketball superstars are going to be giving us what every sports fan wants and that my friend is something to look forward to! As we head into the sweltering dog days of summer all I can say at this point is Play On!!!
