LET’S HEAR YOUR STORY
If you were confused seeing the results of this week’s college football championship playoffs selection please fear not because you are certainly not alone. Considering all the anticipation of a twelve team playoff format the entire process is turning into a bit of a let down. Not only did they seemingly ignore huge losses for a couple of the previous week’s top teams (Georgia and Miami), the teams that pulled off major upsets (Ol Miss) didn’t seem to get any credit and got no where in the rankings. Once again, selectors sitting at some high dollar resort are squabbling about scheduling strength and conference standings while the really important stats like wins and losses are ignored. It’s turning into a circus that we’ve all seen before. Frankly, I have no idea why they bother. In my opinion the only stats that should count are the stats gained on the field!
It’s been quite a week in college football and if the trend continues it should be quite a weekend coming up. For the dozen or so teams still in the hunt for a spot in the playoffs it’s Go Time and a slip up at this point would be detrimental to future endeavors. Winning alone isn’t enough according to the selection committee, you need to win convincingly. Go Figure.
The only team I see out there with the talent and fortitude to go the distance is Oregon. They’ve beaten the snot out of everyone they’ve played and are loaded deep with talent. Heisman front runner Dylon Gabriel is throwing and running for touchdowns non stop. With their remaining opponents looking a bit on the weak side I don’t see anyone beating The Ducks but you never know. They have yet to venture into the valley of death , also known as The South Eastern Conference. Best of luck with that.
Of course there’s still a good bit of football coming up this month especially in the rivalry department. Alabama has yet to play Auburn, Ohio State is gonna try and finally beat Michigan and Oregon has Oregon State to contend with. Nothing is written in stone by a long shot folks. Unfortunately the selection committee doesn’t see things my way. If you talk to them they’re acting like the season is over. Regrettably I see the same teams in it at the end, Alabama , Georgia and Ol Miss seem to always squeak in. Ohio State, the perennial losers of the playoffs are of course in after kicking the pants off of DII schools all year but we’re gonna see what Michigan has for them.
In short, the playoff series just looks like the same game on a different field to me. I suppose that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
There’s a brighter spot on the horizon and I’m gonna start by doing a hard left and talk, briefly, about college basketball. Yes it’s that time of year and yes there have been some great games already. Naturally all the blue blood teams like Kentucky, Kansas, Duke and North Carolina are already in the mix. UConn looks strong again in both the men’s and woman’s teams. Of course it’s important to remember that the transfer portals and NIL money deals extend into all sports, not just football, so you’re gonna see a lot of talent spread out across the country like we’ve seen on the football fields. In any event I’m looking forward to a great college basketball season and a exciting tournament come March! Let the games begin!
With all of this on the table it’s important that I continue to focus on college football picks for a few more weeks. I’m dropping a bit under 50 percent and I need to have a good weekend. With big rivalry games coming up and many teams running the score up out of personal feelings or a shot at the football playoffs you’re bound to see some crazy spreads. Giving or taking 23 points this late in the season seems almost like a crime but the odds makers usually come out ahead, I suppose that’s why the casinos are flush with cash and I’m lighting my good luck candles every Saturday. Play On I Say!!
