LET’S HEAR YOUR STORY
Another NFL season has now come and gone. The playoffs are over, The Super Bowl has been played. A Championship Team has been crowned. I always feel somewhat empty on the Monday after the Super Bowl. I tend to wander around my house feeling lost. No more football games to look forward to next weekend. No more pondering my picks every Thursday. For the first time in several months my television is silent. The drama on the field has been played out so this means temporarily anyway, that my main source of sporting entertainment for the past 6 or 7 months has come to a close. Yes, there will probably be some occasional off field football drama to talk about, some theatrics and blunders even some occasional trade rumors to deal with but before I put a lid on this season indulge me as I recap my thoughts about the big game this past Sunday.
In my opinion this may have been the most evenly matched Super Bowl in recent memory. With the game time point spread of 1.5 this gave Philadelphia the slight favorite status (or was it to Kansas City?) it was hard to decide on who to pick. As I discussed and published last week (no Monday morning quarterbacking on my part, yes I’m bragging a little) I leaned toward Kansas City and low and behold I was correct. Ok, that said as my friends had to hear it all of yesterday from me. It was a very entertaining game, close for nearly four complete quarters that left the game tied 35-35 with about 5 minutes to go in the fourth quarter. A few minutes later the Chiefs were able to pull away 38-35 with a chip shot field goal.
I must say that Jalen Hurts was impressive as was the entire scheme of the Philadelphia Eagles, for at least the first half that is. The old days of defenses keeping offenses to third and short I think are gone. Going for it on fourth down seems to be trending and for Philadelphia it’s trending rather well. The combination of Jalen Hurts at Quarterback along with AJ Brown and Devonte Smith as wide receivers is lethal. The Eagles have drafted well. Initially it looked like they would power thru the Chiefs however once the game settled down and momentum shifted the Mahomes factor took effect.
I’ve pretty much decided that if Patrick Mahomes had been drafted by any other team and coached by any other head coach then Andy Reid he wouldn’t be the player he is today, nor would the Chiefs be the team that they are. The combination of the two has created a balanced offense that gives so many different looks it’s impossible to keep up. Add to that the skills of Travice Kelce, Ju Ju Smith Schuster and a solid, formidable running game and you are left with the obvious, a Super Bowl winning team.
The difference between the first and second half for the Kansas City Chiefs was like night and day. Mahomes gimping off the field at half time on a bum ankle was not a good look. He was clearly in pain. Personally, I thought he was done. The opening of the second half changed all that. After being man handled the first two quarters the Chiefs went the length of the field for a touchdown on the opening drive of the second half, mostly running the ball. Four straight scoring drives against a stunned and confused Philadelphia defense was too much for the Eagles. Credit veteran head coach Andy Reid for making some startling half time adjustments. A late field goal with just seconds left on the clock put the game away for good in favor of the Chiefs. Game over, season over. Half a nice flight home Philadelphia. Let the Patrick Mahomes love fest begin.
So were do we go from here sports fans? We jump right back into it, that’s were. After a 24 hour hiatus were I listened to just about a million sob stories about how the officials stole the Super Bowl from The Philadelphia Eagles I came to the realization that we are staring at a full slate of sporting events to keep us occupied for the months to come. The NCAA Basketball Tournament in all its collegiate glory is just a few weeks away. Everyone’s favorite horse race, The Kentucky Derby, billed as the fastest 2 minutes in sports, is about 8 or 9 weeks down the road. Not to be overwhelmed by The NFL, The XFL Professional Football League begins their second (or is it third?) season in about a week or so. Baseball parks all across America are cutting their grass and trimming their hedges in preparation for spring training for Major League Baseball. The NBA season is heating up and offering us the usual plate full of intrigue and drama. Next month of course is the NFL draft and we all know what that means and just to keep us in the right frame of mind for football the NCAA is releasing its week number 1 schedule and it’s a doozy! Throw in the Stanley Cup playoffs and The English Premiere Football(soccer) League and things are looking bright again for us sports fanatics! So, you see fellow sports fans, life goes on even after The Super Bowl. There is hope after all.
So much to see, watch and write about! Keep your eyes (and ears) right here for all the latest sports talk and you’ll be excited as I am! Till next week!! All the best Kev.
