Giants reportedly signing former Blue Jays starter Ross Stripling for $25M; are they out on Carlos Rodón?

According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the San Francisco Giants have come to terms with former Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Ross Stripling on a two-year, $25 million contract.

The development comes only one day after the Blue Jays added former New York Mets pitcher Chris Bassitt to their rotation. Stripling, 33, has spent the last two seasons and more with the Blue Jays. In 2022, he had a career-high 3.01 ERA and 1.020 WHIP while striking out 111 batters and walking 20 in 134 1/3 innings pitched.

Stripling returns to the NL West, where he spent four seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers before being traded to Toronto in the middle of the season in 2020. For the most of his career, he has alternated between starting and relieving.

Stripling began the season in the Blue Jays' bullpen but finished up making 24 starts in 32 appearances. He has started 104 of the 204 games he has played in his career. He is expected to begin his career in San Francisco with fellow free agency signing Sean Manea, who the Giants recently inked to a two-year, $25 million contract.

What does this deal mean for Carlos Rodón?

Stripling is the latest starting pitcher to leave a market that has seen a number of top arms, including Cy Young Award winners Jacob deGrom and Justin Verlander. Rodón, who was an All-Star with the Giants last season, remains the market's top prize.

According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants are still interested in Rodón, but the signing of another starter in Stripling signals that the two-time All-Star may be on his way somewhere.
