The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 Friday night at Lenovo Center for the team's sixth straight victory.
Taylor Hall, Jack Roslovic, Jalen Chatfield and Eric Robinson all scored for the Canes while Frederik Andersen stopped 24 shots in the win.
After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour along with Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Hall spoke with the media. Here's what they had to say:
Rod Brind'Amour
On the game: I definitely thought we deserved better in the first. That was a really solid period. Even the second was pretty good, but we stuck with it. I don't know what to say other than that, but we've done that always. It's not surprising.
On the penalty kill: The penalty kill has been huge and those guys who have been on it have just done a great job all year. It's a big part of the game, especially in a one-goal game. And then against that team with the power play that they have. All the guys did a solid, solid job.
On building consistency: It looked a lot better for the 60 minutes. This whole year we've played well, it's just been spurts where I think, just four or five minutes in a game and then give up a few. That was the frustration. But all of a sudden, in this last stretch of games, haven't really seen that.
On the Kotkaniemi line: I thought all three of them were impactful. It wasn't just one guy. Every shift, it was just another guy just doing something real positive and sometimes all three of them. Certainly on the goals, nice plays, but really it was real tenacity on the puck. That was a big line for us tonight, for sure.
On when things start to click for new players: Anytime a new guy comes to any place... you don't want to be thinking out there, but you have to know what you're doing. I think that's what we talk about. Sometimes it takes a while and I still think there's a little bit there for [Hall] to look real, real comfortable. It looks like, the way he's been playing, that he fits right in.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi
On following up the first period: I thought we had a good start, just couldn't get the puck in the net. But that's the way we want to play. I think we've started to find that back again. It was unfortuante to be behind one after one period like that, but it is what it is sometimes. Good bounce back for that.
On having a rotating cast of linemates: Getting to know the guys a little bit, so it's fun. But yeah, it helps for sure when you have the same guys for a couple games. Can create something together. So it's been good to play with Hall for a little bit now, get to know him a little better.
On his setup on Roslovic's goal: I don't do that too often, if you haven't noticed. Saw there was a little room there and so tried something new. It worked this time so maybe I'll do that in the future too.
On how Taylor Hall is fitting in with the team: He's great. He's hunting pucks so well, a great skater and can carry the puck too. I think it's the perfect fit for our team. Trying to get to puck to his tape as much as we can. It's been good.
On the team winning six games in a row: It's been good. Like I said, the first period was a good showing of how we want to do it. I think we just need to stick now to what we're doing. The results have been there lately, so just going to try and keep going.
On setting the tone early into a period: I think we just want to keep on going from where we left it in the last period. Like I said, we had a good start so we wanted to have a good second period too. We made that happen so it was good.
On the key to a bounce-back season for himself: I can always say the boring answer, but I just try to work hard and be a little bit better every day. I'm enjoying every day here. It's a beautiful city, good teammates here, so what could be better?
Taylor Hall
On how he's adapting to the team and system: I think personally, my last few games, I'm feeling a lot more adjusted to how we play and just the speed and where I need to go and things. It just takes time. You just need reps and I feel like I'm contributing, I'm helping the squad and obviously for us to win a few games in a row, everyone is doing their part and you really see that. It was a good homestand.
On adjusting to a new team: It's like you have maybe a good game and then a game where you're not as sharp. But then it's two games in a row and then three and you really just start to feel like you can play without thinking. It's kind of how I see it. Maybe guys are different, but when I joined a new team, it takes a while. It takes your mind and your brain and your hockey brain a bit to figure out where to go and how to play. In saying that, I do feel like KK and I are starting to read off of each other well and kind of just chatting after games about what each other are seeing and that chemistry takes time as well.
On stringing together six straight wins: We're getting a bit more puck luck, but I think just getting to our game at the start of puck drop has been there. I know we were down 1-0 after the first, but we still outshot them 10-3, we had our game. We're not tip-toeing into the game. We're asserting ourselves and obviously that might be a bit easier at home, but we're still doing that really well and you're seeing that we're rolling the lines a bit more and everyone's contributing. I know that's a cliche, but you look at the stats night after night and it really is true. That's a good feeling when everyone feels like that.
On what it feels like being on this side of Carolina's dominating, rolling shifts: It's not easy [to face]. It's the same kind of feeling I had when I joined the Bruins. Playing in Boston was a really hard place to play and so is here. It's so nice to be on the other side. You kind of just play without thinking and when I get to that stage, personally as a player, that's when I really feel like I can make plays at high speed and do what I'm good at. Our system, the way we play together, everyone's kind of pulling on the same rope and everyone is aggressive, in their face and not giving them much room. It's really fun to play like that.
On if the players can take solace in the power play starting to move in the right direction as of late: The two power plays tonight were good. You have to start somewhere and whether you score or not, it's about consistency and being able to just get chances. I thought there was a lot of stuff around the net, there were a couple of rebound chances, we had a lot of puck time. So it was a step in the right direction.
On Carolina's penalty kill: They're so good. It's another thing that I've played against for a long time. It's impressive how cohesive the penalty kill unit is and honestly, it kinds of screws us because we have to go against it in practice and it's not exactly a confidence booster when you have to do that.
