Liverpool was struck by tragedy in June, as forward Diogo Jota and his brother were killed in a car crash in Spain. Jota was 28.
On what would have been Jota’s 29th birthday, Liverpool once again paid tribute to the forward. The team posted an image of Jota on social media in which he’s lifting the Premier League trophy.
Today, as every day, we remember Diogo Jota on what would have been his 29th birthday.
All of our love, thoughts and prayers continue to be with his wife Rute, his children, parents and all of his family and friends, as well as those of his brother, Andre.

The team also sent love to Jota’s family, including his wife and kids.
Following Jota’s death in June, Liverpool permanently retired his No. 20 jersey. Jota wore the number in each of the five seasons he played for Liverpool. He scored 47 total goals and had 15 assists in 79 starts with the team. Jota battled injuries during his final year with the club, but helped it win another Premier League title during the 2024-25 season.
Liverpool also announced plans to build a memorial to Jota outside its stadium.
Jota, who was born in Portugal, represented the country in international play. His final match came as a member of Portugal, as Jota played in the team’s 5-3 win over Spain in June.
The Portuguese Football Federation also honored Jota on Thursday.
