Kev’s Corner Weekly Sports Perspective October 1st 2025 Trash Talking in Sports

Someone once said that sports are a lot better when there’s a little bit of trash talk and to be honest I happen to agree with that statement. Actually I’d go a step further and say the more trash talk the better the game, but that’s just me. I’m sure there’s some readers out there that are trying to stay in touch with their more sensitive side, to be more inclusive of their friends and family, to keep the peace at Thanksgiving and Christmas. My bottom line is this; If you’re not rooting for my team then you’re a target for trash talk. You are offic the enemy. Deal with it. Dont come to my house wearing a Tom Brady jersey carrying a 6 pack of Sam Adams Pumpkin Ale and expect a warm reception because it’s not gonna happen. The only thing you’ll find in my fridge is Budweiser and rum.You have been warned

If you’re like me and you watch sports all the time you probably talk a lot of a lot of smack. I think a little bit of trash talk is in each and every one of us just waiting to burst out, especially if you live and work in an area which I describe as “enemy territory” which in essence is living in an area where your favorite team is not only trashed but in many instances vilified or as I call it, victimized.

Take me for instance. I live in South Florida. I’m a Dolphins fan. I’ve always been a Dolphins fan. I’m also a fan of The Marlins, The Panthers and The Miami Heat. I don’t worry about The Buffalo Bills, The Patriots, The New York Knicks or The Boston Bruins. The big beef I’m getting to is that everywhere I go, every one I talk to, every sports bar I visit, all I hear and see and read about is “Bills Mafia”, “Red Sox Nation” or “Celtic Pride”. Please, gimme a break! Are there any Dolphins Bars in the area? Does anyone know who Dan Marino or Larry Czonka is or that The Miami Hurricanes are the original Bad Boys when the Bills were loosing four Super Bowls in a row? Sure, The Dolphins might have not won the Super Bowl in a while but we’ve never lost four in a row. Bills Mafia can kick rocks all way back to Buffalo for all I care and have a nice trip.

Now that I’ve vented for a bit, it’s time to get serious about football. The season is just a few short weeks along  and yes I’m talk about both the NFL and The College Football season. How can you not be excited about it? It’s been weeks, months of what I call “second tear” sports, sports that take a back seat to the daddy of them all, football. It’s been great to see and hear coaches screaming, players sweating and pads popping. It’s only been 4 or 5 weeks and it’s been epic!

Of course like any  football season on week 5 there are dozens of official championship polls and play off picks. It might be a little early for me but I’m sure that it will be interesting if anything. Looking back over the last three years that I’ve been writing for this site I’ve run about 50/50 on predictions so this year I’m trying to improve on that. We’ll take a wait and see stance on that. So far my college picks have been on fire!

Speaking of college football, I’m gonna throw a few stones out there about some things I’ve talked about in the past if anything just to see if they get thrown back.

It’s without doubt that NIL has transformed the college football game and yes I think it’s changed it for the better. Paying players to play is in my opinion one of the greatest decisions ever made in regards to watching the game for the consumer. The amount of talent running to schools, mostly in The South Eastern Conference, has been mind bending. LSU, Ol Miss, and Georgia as well as the rest of them down south have been playing some of the most exciting football I’ve seen in decades. Even Vanderbilt University is on the NIL bandwagon and has a basket full of wins to prove it. Football is back and you better look out for the little guy. Let the games go on and the upsets continue. It’s anyone’s ball game at this moment.
