LET’S HEAR YOUR STORY
At what football stadium in the country will you see someone jump out of a plane before each game? At the Air Force Academy, where the Wings of Blue parachute team skydive into Falcon Stadium delivering the game ball.
In the early 1960s, discussion began on the possibility of building a stadium for the football program as all their games were played at other colleges. That discussion became a reality when funds from Air Force personnel and fans were raised and the stadium was built.
Opening in 1962, the stadium cost $3.5 million. Named after the team, Falcon Stadium has a seating capacity of just over 46,000. On September 22, 1962 the Falcons beat Colorado Springs in the inaugural first game at the stadium. The lower grandstand encloses the playing field while the second and third decks are located on one side of the stadium. The main scoreboard sits above the stands in the endzone. Falcon Stadium has changed very little over the years, but has hosted many memorable football games. Lighting was added in 2002 and a new video board in 2004.
